Rebuilding Simple Home Network - Changing Computer & User Names

Greetings:

I'm rebuilding our home network from scratch. Desktop wired to Linksys
router, laptop connecting wirelessly.

Would like to change the Computer _and_ User names to something more
meaningful. Wouldn't this be the best time to do it - _before_ setting
up the network again? Or will this screw up something I'm not aware
of? (Already know where/how to change the computer and user names, but
not WHEN or IF I should.

Thanks in advance! :-)
