When something is "deleted" the space that the file occupies is "marked" as "free space", to be used as necessary for other file storage. NOW what is your question? Is it a case of you being worried about someone "undeleting" the pictures and seeing what you were viewing? Only way to do that is to "overwrite" the "free space" the files occupied. If that is not your worry, but you were merely concerned about recovering "free space" you have no worry.

Thanks. What I'm now told by an "IT" friend, is the files are ones that were deleted, but remain on the HD, they are just removed from the file allocation table. IF true, is there a way to remove them?

I've never heard of this or ever found files like that on my Windows
machines or on clients' boxen. From your description, I would expect those
files to be in the Temporary Internet Files folder. You need to enable
viewing all hidden files to see them.
I think your information is dubious, but you can clean temporary files with
the free CCleaner. I don't suggest using the registry management tools in
the program, however.
