MP3 players are a "Heavy Demand" type device on a USB root hub.
It's possible that when you plugged it up it created an Overload on
the hub. Not only will the player not work, but it can also cause other
devices to stop functioning. A USB Root Hub can only provide a max
of 500 mA of current. Many portable media players can take almost
that entire amount for themselves.
One thing to do is shut the PC down, Unplug all USB devices. Power
on the machine then re-insert the device plugs one at a time. Start with
your mouse.
Without knowing what USB peripherals you use it's not possible to
state that this is your issue but only a likely cause.
