Re: installing XP

I consider it a Devil's Choice on a laptop. On a desktop I am always going to have a second internal drive for data. But a laptop with a single drive is just something I learn to work with. Thank goodness its easy enough now to get a laptop with two drives. Just grousing.

To install win XP on notebook with DOS only: should I just insert XP CD, restart PC and follow the on screen prompts?
Set the BIOS to boot from the CD first.
Does it will recognize XP Cd with no problems? Partition and formatting hard disk will be done during setup, no needs to format hard disk first?
For 120Gb disk one partition is enough?

Regards,
I would make two partitions, one for XP and programs (C) and one for data (D).

Set the BIOS to boot from the CD first.
How to set this?
When you first boot up you will see "set up" and F1 or Del or some other key to press to go into the BIOS (set up). Once in the BIOS look for Boot Order and set the CDROM to boot first. Put the XP CD in the CDROM drive and Exit and Save the BIOS. Once you're done, go back and reset the BIOS the way it was. When the XP set up has to reboot, DON'T press "any key" to boot from the CDROM or you'll install XP again. Just wait and let it do its thing.

Once XP is installed, install your programs, devices and anti malware in that order. I assume that you have XP with SP2. If not, install XP OFF LINE and then enable the firewall in SP1 and install SP2 before you install anything else.
Once done, download and install CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com and use the Clean Up Feature. Then defrag your C drive.

I would make two partitions, one for XP and programs (C) and one for data (D).

How to make this during setup?
It will be obvious.
What size I should make them?

That would depend on how many programs, especially games, that you plan to install. 30-40 Gigs for the C drive and the rest for the D drive should be enough unless you plan to install 10 or more games.

No games will be at all. Ms Office, Antivirus, Acrobat Reader, graphic applications, etc
"If you select a new partition during Setup, create and size only the partition on which you will install Windows XP Professional. After installation, use Disk Management to partition the remaining space on the hard disk."

So we need set size only for 'C' partition?
Regards.

Yes, and make it 20 gigs so that defragging is quicker. You won't need more than that for what you plan to install.

I think it should suffice even if install a few bulky things like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator?

Yes.

Just have read about choosing a Partition size, that unless we are planning on creating additional partitions from within Windows XP after the installation process (for any number of reasons), it's usually wise to create a partition at the maximum size possible. For most users, the default number provided will be the maximum space available and the best choice.

Nevertheless, does it make sence set two partitions for 120GB hard drive? (20GB for for XP and programs (C) and the rest for data (D).

Regards,

The only reasons I see to create two partitions is that defragging 20 gigs takes less time than 120 and, if XP should go belly up, you can clean install it again to C and still have the data on D.
