Hi
i have a drive that was reformatted and windows xp reinstalled on it
and all data on the drive was lost.

I need to extract a pst file from the old partition, am not sure of
the exact size of the pst, but the user estimates it to be btwn 1.5gb
to 6gb.

i have been using winhex 13 to try and recovery by type, winhex is
able to recover some pst's (over 20 files) but i am not able to import
them to microsoft outlook.

what could i be missing?

First, that you are recovering files that are represented as being pst files of a given size and name. But, the contents may not (and apparently don't) match the Outlook format and may have an amount of trash data instead.

You're getting a box with the right label, but perhaps not its proper contents.

i have used most of the other known tools and i am able to get all the
old data that was there but am not able to get any pst

or whats the best approach shoul i take to try and get this pst out.

your kind assistance is appreciated.

You may find that consumer-level tools just aren't good enough and that professional help is required. The question becomes one to the client: how valuable is the data?

Most recovery houses will offer an estimate service of cost and recoverability; but because this may require actually checking the drive, the estimates may not be free. Rates are often based on the amount of data that needs to be recovered, and it helps if you know the filenames.

Expect these services to start in the hundreds. When I've needed these services for electrically failed drives, the price has started around one thousand, and I've personally seen bills in the several thousands.

Check with the client and call around to recovery services near you.
