My XP SP2 has a serious problem:
It got hang a couple of times and I need to 'reset' it, now when it pass the
POST and prompt me the following file is corrupted, told me to press 'r' to
repair the system file using the original XP CD.
What is the filename? One of these?
"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"
"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE "
I boot from my XP cd and run the setup until came up to the selection
screen. I chose 'R' and got to the dos screen.
I have no idea how to do the repair in this dos screen.
You are apparently at the Recovery Console, and if the missing or damaged file is one of the registry files, that is where you would follow the directions here:

or
