Our Laptop has recently started having problems with the AC power adapter.
If the Laptop is started with AC power applied all is ok. If the AC power is
turned off while the computer is on, it runs okay on the battery and it boots
up and runs ok on the battery. But if while it's running the AC power supply
is disconected and then plugged in again, or if it's started on the battery
and then the AC power is connected, it won't accept AC power and just keeps
flashing the screen while the battery gradually runs down. If the machine is
re-booted while this flashing is going on and the AC adaper is left plugged
in, it accepts AC power okay during the re-boot. We're running XP
Professional (SP2) on the Laptop.
Does anyone have any idea what's gone wrong and how I might fix it?
The problem is likely on the motherboard, and you fix it by taking it for service. Unfortunately, you may find that the service requires motherboard replacement, and is unreasonably expensive.
In that case, you might decide to just take the problem into account when using the laptop and leave it as is.
The OS has no bearing on this. It's a hardware problem that can't be fixed by software.
