The screen to press any key will only appear if the cd drive is higher in the boot order than the hard drive once an OS is installed. If the boot order is hd then cd you will not see the message even if there is something wrong with the OS preventing it from booting. If the order is cd then hd you will see the message for any bootable cd. The boot order is set in the BIOS. Move the cd ahead of the hd and you will begin to see the message.

Hi Colin; See this what I'm trying to explain, when the pc startes with the
cd in a drive, there is no screen that asks me to press any key. It just goes
till everything is loaded. Larry

If you are referring to the "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd..."
message, you only hit a key on the very first time that you have booted the
computer with the cd at the very beginning of the installation. As XP
proceeds through the installation stages it needs to reboot several times
but you just leave it alone and do NOT again hit a key when you see the
message. Each time the message times out and the machine boots into the XP
files now on the hard drive. You should leave the cd AND the keyboard alone
(except that one time when you are just starting the installation) until
Windows is completly installed and then you remove the cd at your leisure.
