Hi Colin; See this what I'm trying to explain, when the pc startes with the
cd in a drive, there is no screen that asks me to press any key. It just goes
till everything is loaded. Larry

If you are referring to the "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd...".
message, you only hit a key on the very first time that you have booted the
computer with the cd at the very beginning of the installation. As XP
proceeds through the installation stages it needs to reboot several times
but you just leave it alone and do NOT again hit a key when you see the
message. Each time the message times out and the machine boots into the XP
files now on the hard drive. You should leave the cd AND the keyboard alone
(except that one time when you are just starting the installation) until
Windows is completly installed and then you remove the cd at your leisure.

Hey Script I want to Thank All You folks for responding to this issue, yes
I
have a new Hey Script; Yes I recieved a product key, don't know what a
key
update tool is. MS e-mailed the product key, and as far as directions,
their
is none. All I recieved was a cd in a case. I've accepted the fact that I
need to install again but when you say boot from the cd I don't know how
far
that boot is to go. I boot normally it goes all the way to desktop, when I
put the cd in and turn the pc on it does the same thing, I guess I must
think
booting from a disk should do somthing different . Larry

Okay, I follow you. (I think)
You're saying MS sent you a "Genuine" XP CD, from which you can do a
"Clean"
install. If they also sent a Product Key, and Key Update Tool, I would do
as
Detlev Dreyer suggests.
But read all instructions, first. And get answers to these questions:
1)Do you only use the Key Update Tool when using the "Upgrade" option?
2)And do you just type in the "Key" (supplied, I with the kit, I suppose)
if
you do a "Clean" install? [and DON'T use the Key Upgrade Tool for clean
install?]
Sounds logical, but I don't "Know", and you need to "Know".
If 1) and 2) are correct:
Back up/save any data that you want to keep, if any, to another drive, or
CD's.
{From one of the two folders with your name}
Boot from the CD.
Delete all partitions.
Create a new partition.
Format (NTFS, for most people)
Choose Install (a new instance of) XP. Enter Key during install.
Activate.

my orignial copy was a guy I know that built my pc, he loaded his copy
which
was a legal copy for me to save some $$$. I recieved after paying
157.04 for
the legal licence.
<inserting from your other "reply"->
I recieved it, meaning I got it in the mail from microsoft genuine
advantage
web site ,paid $157.04, it better damn well better be genuine
The firat time I installed it it was an upgrade install
which the program recomended, The next install was a repair install,
and
finnaly the last one I though was a clean install, I guess that is not
the
case either. Like I said to Colin It's way over my head Larry

Just to clarify, so you can receive help here:
You're saying -
1) your original copy of XP was "counterfeit" software, and that you
"Qualified" for the "kit", as under this heading:
What is the genuine Windows offer?
Q: What is the genuine Windows offer?
A: The Microsoft genuine Windows offer is designed to help customers
who
unknowingly purchased counterfeit versions of Windows XP by offering
those
who qualify a complimentary copy or electronic license key for a
genuine copy
of Windows XP.
Q: What are the details of the genuine Windows offer?
A: To help customers who unknowingly purchased a counterfeit version
of
Windows XP, Microsoft has created two genuine Windows offers for
those who
qualify:
Complimentary offer: Microsoft will make a complimentary copy of
Windows XP
available to customers who have been sold counterfeit Windows.
Customers will
be required to submit a proof of purchase, the counterfeit CD, and a
counterfeit report with details of their purchase. Only high-quality
counterfeit Windows will qualify for the complimentary offer.
Electronic License Key Offer: Microsoft will offer an alternative for
customers who find out via the WGA validation process that they are
not
running genuine Windows, but do not qualify for, or choose not to
take
advantage of, the complimentary offer. These customers will be able
to
license a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP directly from
Microsoft for a special on-line purchase price. The Windows Genuine
Advantage
Kit for Windows XP will include a new 25-character Product Key and a
Windows
Product Key Update tool that will allow customers to convert their
counterfeit copy to genuine Windows XP electronically.

and,
2) you did a "Repair Install" of the counterfeit software WITH a copy
of the
counterfeit software?
and,
3) you qualified for, or chose, the "Electronic License Key Offer",
containing only a Product Key and a pruduct key Update Tool.
Is all of this correct?
