RE: problems one after another



Hey Script I want to Thank All You folks for responding to this issue, yes I
have a new Hey Script; Yes I recieved a product key, don't know what a key
update tool is. MS e-mailed the product key, and as far as directions, their
is none. All I recieved was a cd in a case. I've accepted the fact that I
need to install again but when you say boot from the cd I don't know how far
that boot is to go. I boot normally it goes all the way to desktop, when I
put the cd in and turn the pc on it does the same thing, I guess I must think
booting from a disk should do somthing different . Larry

You're saying MS sent you a "Genuine" XP CD, from which you can do a "Clean"
install. If they also sent a Product Key, and Key Update Tool, I would do as
Detlev Dreyer suggests.

But read all instructions, first. And get answers to these questions:
1)Do you only use the Key Update Tool when using the "Upgrade" option?
2)And do you just type in the "Key" (supplied, I with the kit, I suppose) if
you do a "Clean" install? [and DON'T use the Key Upgrade Tool for clean

Sounds logical, but I don't "Know", and you need to "Know".

If 1) and 2) are correct:
Back up/save any data that you want to keep, if any, to another drive, or
CD's.
{From one of the two folders with your name}
Boot from the CD.
Delete all partitions.
Create a new partition.
Format (NTFS, for most people)
Choose Install (a new instance of) XP. Enter Key during install.
Activate.

I recieved it, meaning I got it in the mail from microsoft genuine advantage
web site ,paid $157.04, it better damn well better be genuine

The firat time I installed it it was an upgrade install
which the program recomended, The next install was a repair install, and
finnaly the last one I though was a clean install, I guess that is not the
case either. Like I said to Colin It's way over my head Larry

and,
2) you did a "Repair Install" of the counterfeit software WITH a copy of the
counterfeit software?

and,
3) you qualified for, or chose, the "Electronic License Key Offer",
containing only a Product Key and a pruduct key Update Tool.

Is all of this correct?

chose update. Went through all the processes and tried to use pc. Had small
problems, mainly my fualt (don 't rember what they were), any way I though I
would try a Repair Install, went through all the processes againe, with more
problems, Missing file folders Icons (generic) under start button all
programs the accesories, games, start up, and some of my other programs. I
search these board for info, on these topics, tried some suggestions with no
luck. Finnaly I tried a clean Install, went through all this again with the
same results, but also now with numerus account files, I have two
Administrator folders two All user folders, a Guest folder, and two folders
with my name on them,one of them with my name has a shortened name with a
couple sqiggly lines behind it, I now think I am way over my head with all
this, I didnt have any probelms with my other copy of xp for three yrs. can I
get some help please
