I don't know what the instructions are. Was the Windows Product Key Update Tool what you used? When you run the tool does it tell you when to insert the genuine cd? Did Windows then get reinstalled from the genuine cd? If you don't think everything went as it was supposed to you should contact MS Product Services Support. Support for installation of Windows is always free and I am sure that the MS Genuine Advantage program falls in that area.

That's exectly what does, my understanding is that it is suppose to stop
before that point to let the cd start the installation

would be an XP full edition. Full editions can do either an upgrade or
clean installation too. If MS provided you with a standard XP Pro SP2 cd
then I see no reason why it wouldn't do just as you describe and continue
straight through until the desktop came up.
