Glad you got it sorted somehow, but you need to see if the machine is clean
by doing these cleaning steps:

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Scan for malware from here:

After the scan run disk cleanup on your drive.

tools - Java Console in IE7 without being dumped out of IE7.

I cannot take control of the webcam, despite being given the option, and the
picture is not live (as in streaming) but then it does say that I should have
an earlier version of Java in order to do that.

I think I'd better quit whilst I'm ahead.

I'm extremely grateful for your help and that from other contributers.

I'll be back in Dundee in the not too distant future. Maybe I should ask
the City Elders to update their software :).

A calender will pop-up and radio button for a restore, select the Bold Blue
date in the calender from last week and check mark the Restore Point radio

Either Restore to before this actions took place or Reset the IE option back
to default.
I think you gone to Security tab>> Custom settings and changed the Java
Plug-ins there.
make sure the machine is malware/virus free.

See this:
Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Internet options>> Advanced tab.
scroll down to:
[&] Javae (Sun)
[ ] Use JRE Version here for <applet> <<- Check this box

[$] Microsoft VM
[ ] Java Console enabled (Req Rest)
[ ] Java logging enabled
[ ] JIT Compiler for VM Enabled (Req Rest) <<= check this check box.
Click [OK] to apply the changes and Reboot your machine.
