You might want to check the System Event log for any problems that are
logged during the backup session. The program may have been cancelled
but it's likely some of the dependant services are still active or maybe
file
handles are opened and not properly released.
Backup is a basic application that hasn't kept pace with current needs. It
might be better to check on an Imaging application such as Acronis True
Image.
To check the Event Log:
Click Start, Run ( Type ) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand the System Category and scan the Right Pane for Red Icons that
denote errors. Double-Clicking each will bring up the details box.

When I try to back up my C drive to an external hard drive using Windows
back
up. the back up will lock up and I'll have to cancel the task. Then when I
try to run BACKUP again, when I click on the icon (or select backup from
the
systems tools menu), it doesn't do anything.
Back up will not do anything again until I reboot my computer. This always
happens whenever I have had to abort a backup before it completes
.
