Sister Mary,

You are right! In traceing down my connections, I discovered that was
exactly what I was doing. I connected the camera via a usb cable, heard
the
connection tone, and the camera lcd displayed on the screen USB MODE.
There
were two icons, one labeled PC and the other labeled M. There was a
message
on the bottom that said "accessing files", and two sets of arrows
displayed
between the two icons.

That's as far as it gets. Nothing else happens, and the two icons remain
on
the lcd. I looking at windows explorer (or my computer) I do not see any
drive letter designated for my dv camera. I then right clicled on my
computer, selected "Manage" then selected Disk Management. There, the
installed devices includes a drive "G" which is designated as my dv
camera. I
have two 250gb hdd's that are labeled C, D, & E, and a dvd burner labeled
F,
so G would be the proper drive letter for the dv camera.

Therefore I conclude that the pc and the dv camera are "shaking hands"
but
are not completing the connection. At this point, I don't know what to
try
next.

You have to set the camcorder to the memory card - the USB
connection cannot recognise anything else but the memory card
and that is for you to discern how to set cam to "out" via USB.
If you don't have the instruction manual then post back with exact
make and model and I'll look it up.

Or try this:

Shutdown
Connect powered off Cam via USB
Set dial/switch on cam to "memory" or "USB"
Boot PC
Once XP fully loaded
Power on the camcorder
Does an icon appear in system tray identifying cam?
If not - shutdown and power off cam
If connected to a USB card that also has another device
connected, or to a hub with other devices, disconnect
other decvices (maybe a conflict?),
With just cam connected via USB, try again.
