I seem to be having the same issue. Windows Explorer intermittently crashes
for no reason.
I can't make it happen reliably, but when it has happened, it did not happen
when the laptop was in standby or hibernate previously. It was not docked.
I have managed to make it happen when windows XP just came up.
My laptop is a Lenovo T61p (Vista Certified, so hopefully XP compliant as
well).
I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2, the computer is virus free. It can
happen with simply running windows media player and drag and drop. No other
applications are running.
Here is an example of the crash output:
Windows Explorer
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer:6.0.2900.2180 ModName:mplvw7.dll
ModVer:1.0.0.3 Offset: 0001c154
I tried the patch mentioned earlier, but that did not fix it.
Thank you....Amro

Does anyone know of a solution to the very frequent occurrences of Windows
Explorer hanging and shutting down for no apparent cause? Sometimes I'm
moving files and other times the folder is simply open in the background and
it hangs up and dies.
I never had this problem on Win 2K. I'm not happy with XP and I have doubts
about Vista unless something is done.
This is not normal behavior for XP and there is something wrong with
your computer. Unfortunately, we don't have any information from you so
we can give you focused help. This link will show you what details to
include in your next post:

In the meantime, things to check:
1. If this was an upgrade (or clean install) onto a machine designed for
Win2k, does it meet XP's hardware system requirements?
2. How old is the computer? Give details about its hardware (see #1
above). Perhaps test the RAM and the hard drive.

3. If an upgrade, did you run the XP Upgrade Advisor first in case some
of the installed software is incompatible with XP?
4. Did you install the correct drivers for all your hardware for the XP
operating system?
5. Is the computer completely virus/malware-free?

6. What processes/programs are running in the background?
