Yea that was the first thing i did. But if it was a router issue - why can I
still use MSN messenger?
I have also tried it on my home and work network - (where I am accessing the
internet from currently) to no avail.
I have uninstalled all updates
I tried rolling back to two system restore points from this week - that
didnt help either - the system would not restore.
I have tried installing norton 360 - that crashes and is unrecoverable so
wont get past teh configuring for my needs stage - so that was a waste of
time.
any more suggestion gratefully recieved. . .

Is your internet connection through a router? Power off the router wait
10 minutes and reconnect?

Hi Gerry
Its Internet Explorer 7 Version7.0.5730.11 on A windows Xp Pro SP2
Media Centre O/S
When in the Windows Update section - whihc has been slighlty screwed
by Sony Vaio Customisation which made following yoru instructions
difficult - it also says "i need to connect to the internet" when i
go into the windows update section.
However I was able to find a fuller diagnostic tool that failed under
two reasons:
IPAddress = 192.168.2.27 (FAILED)
Pinging 192.168.2.27 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

However I have a feeling that this is a symptom of a bigger problem
as both networks have dynamically assigned IP addresses rather than
fixed.
I have now uninstalled all updates that came down from the net last
night to no avail.
I am going to attempt a system restore back to yesterday evening to
see if that brings back anything.

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?
Check whether the updates failed or were successful.
Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed
Icon (if any) in the Status Column. What does it say for the failed
update??
What update were involved?

Ok
I got an update last night from Microsoft updating my machine -
woohoo until I rebooted then I seemed to lose all ability to view
webpages. MSN Messenger/Live Msgr still works but IE and Firefox no
longer connect to pages. Net Diagnostic doesnt work as it tells me
everything is fine.
Please help
thanks
