Re: Lack of PS2 port prevents installation of XP

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

It seems that only OEM motherboards will have the problem of not having a PS/2 port at least for the keyboard. I wonder how much cost they can cut by excluding the PS/2 port.

If you're speaking in people generations (approximately 20 years per generation), an 8086 won't cut the mustard.

R. McCarty suggested the legacy for USB in the bios, not Don J. You responded to Don J's post instead.

I don't understand why those money-saving motherboard maker misers quit installing a PS/2 port for a keyboard myself.

Believe there is a mouse cue to continue after entering the product key. Enter key on the keyboard will also work.

I have looked through the BIOS many times. There is no USB legacy support, or anything remotely resembling it. I point out that in its present state, if it is possible to install a new operating system such as Vista, it would then be impossible to reinstall XP

Think I am going to have to borrow back a two generations old computer that a few years ago I gave to the wife.

Why do I NOT see a lot
of discussion of this fact in the newgroups?

maybe because most people only install XP once or twice in 5years.........not every month
and they have learned to enable lagacy USB support in the BIOS

I am using Windows XP. I have available 4 USB keyboards. They all have the
same problem. PS2 keyboards do not have the problem. Unfortunately I also
have a "lenovo" computer which does not have any PS2 ports. Only USB ports!

The problem always occurs when I enter the Windows XP installation disk from
outside Windows XP. It also always occurs when I enter Windows XP from
inside Windows XP and I select the "New Installation (Advanced)" option .
The "Upgrade (Recommnded)" option entered from inside Windows XP does not
suffer the problem.

There is no problem typing in a "Product Key", but when it comes to the
screen marked "To continue installing Windows XP press Enter", the program
fails to respond to an "ENTER" keystroke. The program has frozen and cannot
continue.

For awhile the "leveno" computer worked fine with a "leveno" USB keyboard,
but that has all stopped now. The "leveno" keyboard now works the same as
the other USB keyboards.

Looks like I don't have any way of reinstalling Windows XP, unless I buy a
new computer.

From my perspective it is a universal truth that Windows XP cannot be
installed with a USB keyboard, only a PS2 keyboard. Why do I NOT see a lot
of discussion of this fact in the newgroups?
