If the PC is sitting there idle, say, with an email client open and Firefox

go to say click on a link, then the modem is disconnected.

The last time that this occured, a few minutes ago, we'd been out. We got home
and the wife went to check her webmail. As she clicked on it she got the
"website not found" message. I then checked the modem. Sure enough it was
disconnected and trying to re-establish the connection.

In past discussions it was centred on the computer booting up and what processes
could be interupting the modem's connection to the ISP. Now, we can discount
this.

As far as the PC config goes, it has static IP addresses enabled. No DHCP.
Windows XP Pro SP2. I have 3 other PCs on the network and all of them are
configured identically, and also running XP SP2.

I do not have any power saver modes active, so hard disks, monitors, etc. do not
go into hibernation or standby modes.

The PCs all connect into the network via the ADSL modem's 4 port switch.

This problem is really frustrating me as I cannot pick out any discrepancies
between it and the other computers on the network.

It looks like you have one those modem/router units. Check to see if you
can login to the router/switch part for setup/maintenance; if you cannot
then it is the ADSL/router that is crashing not the PCs killing the internet
connection. Also you can see if the internect connection if you reboot
the modem/router; if you can access the internet again it is time for a
new modem/router or separate units of modem & router, which I think
would be easier to determine problems. Of course the problem could be
the ADSL part.

I had a similar problem with my Netgear VPN router & thought the PC was
the problem as it had a new updated motherboard with gigabyte capability.
The only solution I found was to reboot the router by disconnecting the power
cable from the router, wait about 20 sec then reconnect; the computer was
able to continue to do whatever it was doing on the internet "as if nothing
happened" except for the winxp notification of network disconnection &
reconnection. The leds on the router claimed everything was ok even when
it wasn't.

My more permanent solution was just to get another router from another
company as Netgear "support" is non-effective like many companies & want
payment to help fix problems created by the company.
