EMC 8 had a disk copying module, but as I mentioned, EMC is uninstalled. I think Winamp can copy disks, as can WMP and the Real player, but I was able to burn in the past while these programs were installed.

Do you have some sort of disk copy software like Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools,
etc.? These types of programs have "features" that force a CD/DVD burner to
see recordable media as if the media were NOT recordable. It's a "feature"
that is often used by software pirates (or everyday folks that download
illegal copies of things) that tricks some forms of copy protection into
thinking the CD in the drive is actually a CD/DVD-ROM disk instead of a
writable disk, so that it will allow the execution of the illegal copy of
the software. If this is enabled in one of these programs, you will not be
able to burn anything, nor erase a re-writable disk.

Well, not only did Kaspesky /not/ interfere, I discovered that the registry
edit suggested in the MSKB article /did/ 'stick'...as far as the Windows
registry is concerned I have two CD-RW drives (which is as it should be.)
And I also tried media from Memorex (a CD-RW) and Verbatim (a DVD-R) and
still I have the same problem. Windows does not recognize that these drives
are burners.

Now I'm really lost.

I was, until very recently, using Roxio's Easy Media Center 8 for most
burning tasks. I uninstalled the entire thing just a few days ago because I
use other software now for multimedia tasks (and because I got fed up with
EMC). I've read that my problem can be caused by versions of EMC prior to
version 6, but like I say, I had version 8. In any case, CD and DVD burning
worked fine with EMC 8.

I've used, at various times in the past, Windows Media Player (multiple
versions), the Real Player, Yahoo Music player and Winamp to burn music CDs,
all with no trouble. Just tonight I tried to use XP's CD Writing Wizard to
burn two simple files to a CD-R and that's when I realized I have this
problem.

I'm using brand name (TDK) CD-Rs.

Wait...just got an idea. I wasn't prompted by my security software
(Kaspersky Inyernet Security) when I made the registry edit. Maybe KIS just
took it upon itself to reverse the edit. I'll check right now and report
back momentarily. Thanks for sticking with me.
