Hi,
My son has successfully broken all four internal usb ports on my old laptop,
have tried several times to strip it down but is harder than i though. I use
it to connect to my wireless network and surf in another room. Can I use a
Ethernet to USB convertor the plug into this a powered usb hub ? will this
then give me back USB ports and be able to plug my bluetooth dongle back in
and way to go??

NO! USB to Ethernet adapter does not provide USB signals over the
Ethernet. It converts Ethernet signals to USB.
Do you have either a PCCARD or PCMCIA slot?
