Headphones plug problem

Hi
Mb asus P5B - integrated soundcard
Software Soundmax analog devices.
If I plug in headphones correctly, so that soundmax detects the device
the sound is messy-even if I disable auto-detect. But if I plug half way
the headphones, merely in a way they do not lock in the panel the sound
is ok.
Any ideas?
