DVDs do not play

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I have a friend with Winodws XP SP2 and all the latest updates. He
says he used to be able to play DVDs on his machine but now if you
insert a DVD you get a message that it can't be played and to lower
the resolution and or the color quality. The screen resolution was
already set as low as possible 800x600 on his machine and the color I
changed from 32-bit to 16-bit and nothing changed. I tried both the
Windows Media Player and another player that I instaled from the DVD.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here?
