I am running Windows XP and have, for the most part had no issues until
recently. I tried to install a new version of Symantec, Norton Antivirus
after running an older version for quite some time. Those attempts failed due
to errors upon installation. After giving up on that, I have recently tried
to install Zone Alarm Pro Internet Suite, and am now recieving the same type
of error. I reboot, and try to install, intstallation errors out. When I try
again, I recieve a message that tells me I do not have admin. privlages to
complete this task? This cycle just repeats itself over and over. I have
performed uninstalls of old Symantec, and old Zone Alarm, unfortunately there
are still shared symantec dll files that I am unable to delete. If anyone has
any advice or ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

A number of experts agree that the retail AV version of McAfee, Norton and
Trend Micro has become cumbersome and bloated for the average user.

In addition to the advice provided by nass and PA Bear, you may also wish

If the Norton and ZA removal tool don't work satisfactory use this:
Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Remove unwanted programs and traces easily
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
and/or
RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker will remove all associated detritus (registry keys, files and
folders) from any application. I found this application user friendly and
very effective but suggest *not* to use the 'Clean the Registry' option.
Click onto 'Find in registry' and in the 'Search for' box type *Norton or
Symantec or ZoneAlarm*; The pertinent registry keys can then be safely
deleted (just in case, ensure that the 'Backup before deletion' is
checked). Repeat the task by typing in the Search for' box *Symantec*. You
can then go on search and remove associated files as well.

Then use NTREGOPT to *compact* the registry; Follow instructions.
