IE freezes? Can't install SP2? No add/remove programs?

As a note, all this started happening after a repair install of my xp pro

So basically, after repairing and reinstalling my IE6, every time I go to
windows update, IE freezes. Everything else works, but I can not access
windows update.

Since I am back to oem, I need to upgrade to SP2 right? Well I had it
downloaded, thankfully, but it only goes so far in the progress bar, about
3/4 of the way, then hangs. I left for over an hour and came back and it was
still at the same spot. Not frozen, just wouldn't progress any further. That
is upsetting, because I don't know how else to install it.

Also, when I open my add/remove programs, it is just an empty window, with
no programs or a scrollbar or anything. I checked the registry at:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall" and
all the programs I had are listed there, they just don't appear on the actual
add/remove programs list.

After doing some research, it was recommended that I uninstall IE7 and SP2
BEFORE I attempt a repair install of xp. Well I wish I knew that before, at
least I got IE back I just can't upgrade anything. Any ideas? Sorry I know
this was long and not very informative.
