It's been suggested to me that the first method may rely on some sort
of password caching. I'm very confident that it does not. I only
have one user on this computer and that user does not have a
password. If, however, in the unlikely event it were password
caching, how would I clear this hypothetical password cache?

Make sure the Netlogon service is up and running.

how do I do that?

On both computers:
Start | Run
services.msc
[Enter]

Dubble click "Net Logon"
change starttype to "Auto"
and click on Start
click OK
