Actually, the Desktop was never intended to be a repository for any
items beyond the few system icons ( Recycle Bin, Computer, Network ).
Because finding downloads was technically beyond the grasp of most
average users the Desktop became a "Catch All" for making things a
little easier to find and manage.

The QuickLaunch bar provides a better, more efficient way to access
certain items quickly with a minimum of mouse clicks. Even faster than
using the cascading Programs, All Programs.....to click through.

Anyway, you can position and save Desktop icons in most any way
you prefer - it doesn't take a Feature request to accomplish what you
are after. Just Right Click a empty area of the Desktop and use the
option - "Arrange Icons by..." . Start by modifying the "Align to Grid"
and "Auto Arrange" options.

You cannot get Windows to horizontally "Auto Arrange". Only vertically.
