Hi,

I have recently bought a basic headset (headphones with mic attached). I
plugged the headphones part into my green sound socket, and the mic part
into
the pink socket. My PC says they are in the correct sockets, I can even
hear
sound through the headphones. Unfortunately I cannot hear my voice while
when
I speak into the mic and listen back to it. That is my problem.

I have accessed
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound recording
volume,
in the Recording Control I have selected Options > Properties, and made
sure
the microphone option was selected and not muted. I then did the advanced
tab
under the microphone column and experimented recording both with and
without
Microphone Boost on.

I have also tried the Master Volume, experimenting both with and without
the
microphone option muted.

My PC:
Windows XP Home Edition SP2, AMD Althlon 64 Processor, 2.41 GHz, 2.00 GB
RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7300GT video card, Asus M2N-E Motherboard with
onboard
SoundMAX.

I have searched everywhere in many forums for an answer, having failed I
have posted my problem here. I know there are other threads on mics not
working, but they haven't helped.

Please, if you need any more information about the problem tell me an I
will
provide it.


I'm not 100% clear what you are doing here. It sounds like you are using
the microphone and expecting to hear the sound through the headphone
(which is connected to the headphone/speaker output). Many sound cards do
not route the microphone input to the headphone/speaker output by design
(the microphone slider on the playback mixer panel is there because the
microphone input is). This avoids feedback when speakers are in use.

On these cards, the microphone will work with applications that accept its
input for recording purposes, the level is set by the slider on the
recording mixer panel (Options, Properties and click the 'Recording' radio
button having checked that microphone is checked on the properties page
and then again on the recording mixer itself). The microphone can be
removed from the playback mixer if you wish.

Another possible problem is that some sound systems (I am not familiar
with SoundMAX) permit additional functionality, such as supporting
surround sound. These recycle the microphone input as a speaker output
and as a result, microphone input is lost while these modes are selected.

My final thought is that the microphone is a 'plug in power' device which
your sound system does not support.

On closing the above, I noticed that this PC has a SoundMAX on board sound
(it is not my home PC). A quick check reveals that indeed the microphone
sound does not come out of the speakers. I can record it.
