Thanks anyway. It is a MB problem. Removed soundcard and went to the
onboard card, no change. I clone the drive every 3 months so I installed my
July clone and the problem was still there. As you know, replacing the the
drive with the clone removed all software issues and leaves only hardware.
Very odd, only happens on WAV files. So it goes. I don't much care why,
now I know what to change out.

Have you gone to Control Panel "Sounds and Audio devices" and check all.
those advanced settings?

Thanks for the thought, but as I said, everything is up. This means all
virtual controls as well as physical contorls.
I uninstalled my soundcard and software (creative) and went ot the board
card (sigma). With all maxed I can at least make out the sounds. But
interestingly, Windows shutdown is very loud while windows recycle and others
are harldy noticeable.
I am currently reinstalling the creative stuff and may run out for a new
sound card.
In the mean time, if anyone has any other thoughts, I would greatly like to
hear them.

Is the Volume setting for Wave files turned down? Double click the
volume control and open the advanced volume setting.

This plain vanilla Win XP been running for 2 years or so. Came back from a
trip and found that it does not playback WAV files. More to the point, they
are barely audible with everything turned up. I checked my settings on the
volume controls (software and hardware); copied the files to another computer
and they playback fine. MP3 files and such are fine.
Did a system restore to September and no improvement.
Computer stays on as it is my answering machine.
Any help please?

Dewey
