Yes, the Windows XP boot menu.
When? The system had been behaving erratically for a month now and we solved
the problem by letting it restart auto via "Start Window Normally" and after
a few restarts, it went into Normal mode.
No H'ware or S'ware changes.
Both window's f'walls are "ON" and Virus scanner updated daily and checked.
I had regularly created restore points and when just a while ago tried to
access them ... none were found, in neither profile and admin.
The mystery deepens.

I am a little confused with your report. When you write "multi selection",.
are referring to the Windows XP boot menu? And did you actually
try to boot in Normal Mode from the boot menu, after disabling the
various startup programs and non-Microsoft services?
At this time it is appropriate to ask about the recent history of
this machine:
- When did the problem became apparent?
- What did you just before? Hardware change? Software installation?
- Do you have an up-to-date virus scanner?
- Do you have a firewall?
I now recommend that you boot the machine into Safe Mode, then
use System Restore to return Windows to a data a few days before
this problem started.

Tks Pegasus for a swift reply.
Just done items 1 - 6, however NO "normal boot". Have tried:
a) let system restart in "normal start-up" after the 20 secs, got the
multi
selection 1) Safe mode, 2) Safe mode w/Networking etc.
b) when selecting Safe Mode and run MSCONFIG.exe, the "Selective start-up"
is ticked with 1st two and a "grey" tick on services.
How do we go from here?
Tks.

Running WinXP Pro SP2 on Pent4 1.7GHz 512 MB RAM.
System keeps on an un-ending re-boot loop. LBC does not work, however
SafeBoot w/Network goes well. In that mode it allows me to activate all
s'wares even burn CD's... Amazing !
I ran the Repair Console, changing both Make Boot adn MakeMBR, same
problem
remains.
Would anyone have had similar experience and wld like to share how to
overcome this annoying situation.
Thanks a lot.
This may seem amazing until you consider the difference between
Safe Mode and Normal Mode. In Safe Mode, only the basic stuff
gets loaded. In Normal Mode you get the lot. Your challenge is to
identify the culprit. Here is how you can do it:
1. Physically disconnect your machine from the Internet.
2. Boot into Safe Mode.
3. Run msconfig.exe.
4. Disable each and every task under the Startup tab.
5. Click Services and tick the box that will hide Microsoft services.
6. Disable each and every remaining service.
You should now be able to boot into Normal Mode. Run
msconfig.exe again and enable first services, then tasks
selectively until your problem reappears.
Do not restore your Internet connection until your firewall/
virus scanner is reactivated.
