Re: speaker -have sound but not the mic

For the MIC to work ( record your voice) you must have 1. A functioning MIC
[ stating the obvious:-) ]
2. MIC is inserted into the MIC port ( unless it is a USB/ Fire types)
securely.
3. MIC Port (usually Red or pink or with a MIC Icon by its side) must be
functioning ( ie the port is connected to the Sound card or is part of the
sound card )
4. The Sound card ( either Integrated with MoBoard or inserted in the PCI
slot of MoBo) must be OK ( undamaged hardware) and properly inserted (
looks OK if you can hear music CD or Windows Startup music.
5. The Device Manager should show that the Sound Card has the correct
driver for the Operating System ( No error symbols)
6. That you have selected this Device driver in the "Audio" tab. [ Under
the section "Sound Recording" "Default device": box [ Start >Control
Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices> Sound and Audio Devices Properties> Audio
(tab)> Sound Recording" (section)

The Sound Play back seems OK as you are able to hear Audio CDs through your
Speaker. Otherwise that must be the same Driver as in Recording in your
setup ( with a single sound card) . Use the down arrowhead of the respective
"Default device" boxes to choose. the correct device driver
7. Sound Volume in Recording and Play back to be adjusted and not "Muted".
Hope this helps.

With the speaker (green) and the mic (red) plugged in, isn't it that when
I speak into the mic, I should be able to hear my voice coming out of the
speakers? I can hear the music When I play songs with the media player.
Please advise, Thanks.

That's an unwanted effect in most cases; it causes feedback. If you
wanted to sing to Karaoke, you'd want that though. To get it, try turning
on the Mic under Playback in the Properties section of "Sounds and Audio
Devices".

Also look through these Google hits on the question.
