I used to have ZA free version and yahoo messenger never seemed to be all that bothersome, I switched to Kas internet security (which has it's own firewall) and discovered messenger was attempting to send and receive info at the oddest times, I would leave my pc for hours messenger was silent, I attempt to open excel, and suddenly KAS firewall alerts me that messenger wants access to the internet at a port it's not used before. of course I block it, it's happened many times, with other programs, messenger appears to be sending out info on what I do with my pc, quicken is a good one, I use that to keep my finances planned for the years taxes, when I close it, messenger wants to connect to the internet, I find that odd.

and of course the usual doubleclick ads, which KIS blocks , thankfully.
Anybody got an idea what is really going on?

I have DSL and the connection is 24/7 messenger is always up, to talk to my friends and family.

An IM client constantly communicating with the server. That's just what it's supposed to do. It would need to periodically inform the server that your IM client is still operating and ready to receive instant messages. It adds to the traffic when an advertising supported IM service checks in periodically to obtain fresh ads.
