Re: Computer switches on automatically

Did YOU check to see if 'wake on LAN' was active?

Had a PC that does this. It was one of those cheapo clones I got from a
local store. Bought two of them from these people, both had problems, and
was
finally tired of lugging the units back. And the PC turning on was a minor
problem compared to a burnt out MOBO, USB ports not working etc.

So my wife got me a little swtich that plugs into the power strip, and
into
that I plug the PC power cord. After I down the PC, I switch the power
off.
Far simpler than spending time reading the manual or arguing with the PC
salesman.

An alternative was to run the shutdown program every thirty minutes at
night
on the scheduler. I have some of my PC's hiberate at night automatically,
wakeup to run some tasks before the start of the business day, and then
hibernate again, so this would not be unusual.

From here on in, I just get myself an HP or other brand name, as I've
never
had problems with them as I had with the cheapo clones.

Maybe the BIOS has a bug or perhaps the previous setting
did not stick. You could try turning the various modes on,
save the settings, then turn them off again.

I just had a look at the BIOS power settings and "Power Up on PCI/PCIE
Devices" is disabled. Computer manual explains that this "Allows you to
enable or disable the PME to wake from S5 by PCI/PCIE devices and
onboard
LAN". Can't see Wake On LAN anywhere else in the BIOS.

For the last few weeks, I switch the computer off in the evening but
I
frequently find its on in the morning. Does not always happen but
most
days. On looking at the duration time on my local area connection
this
shows most of the night so the computer switches back on shortly
after I
turn it off. I don't think this has anything to do with Power
settings
on the machine (its set to turn the monitor off after 30 minutes,
Hard
Disk Off and System Standby are set to Never).

Any idea what may be casuing this?

This is a dual boot machine with Vista which I very rarely use. May
be
something in Vista is causing the auto startup?

Neither Vista nor Windows XP can do this: They are both dead
when the computer is off! Have a look at the power settings in
your BIOS, especially the "Wake-up LAN" part. If unsure how
to do this, consult the manual that came with your PC and look
for the words "BIOS Setup".
