The person who told you that doesn't know what s/he is talking about. There can be many reasons for a slow computer - virus/malware infection, too many legitimate but unnecessary programs running in the background, failing hardware, etc. etc.

To troubleshoot your problem:

1. First make sure the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. If the computer is clean, trim your startup -

3. Do maintenance - Slow or Sluggish Computer:

http://aumha.org/a/health.htm - Take Out the Trash

4. If the software looks good, test the hardware, particularly checking to see if the hard drive is in PIO mode:

http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10 (MVP Hans-Georg Michna on PIO/DMA mode)

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Have all your data backed up before taking the machine into a shop.
