The drive can view data CDs and commercial audio CDs. It will not viewThe drive uses (at least) one laser for CDs and (at least) one different

or CDR/CDRWs. With the later the drive spins and the access lights blinks
steadily every second until it fails which would tell me it isn't really
reading the disks. If it was a hardware problem I would expect to not be
able to view anything. Could the DVD head be bad? Any further ideas?

So, if your drive can access a CD but cannot access a DVD, you have a
defective drive.
