Check the specs for your video card to see if it supports resolutions for a widescreen monitor. The screen resolutions you'll see in the Display Properties are determined by the video card.
Also, your widescreen monitor will have a native resolution that it should be run, check you monitor's manual. You may end up having to upgrade the video card to one that supports the monitor's native resolution.

I can't imagine anything on the market today not supporting 1680x1050 but you should check the manufacturers specs before buying.... 1280x1024 sounds awfully low as far as a video card support even for an older card. ...
