I am trying to write files to a CD-RW fresh out of the wrapper. It says
there
are 0 files and 0 space. Also get an error message telling me to insert a
disk. I know the drive works. It reads disks I previously have made on it.
What gives?
It sounds as though you are using XP's own writing aplet. It may be that it
has become disabled (XP seems to randomly alter its configuration on such
things).
If you open 'My Computer' and right click on your CD (or DVD) writer and
select 'Properties', there should be a tab along the lines of 'Recording'.
When opened, there should be a check box 'Enable Recording on this drive'
(or something similar). Clock 'OK'. you should now be able to see the true
free space and be able to drag and drop files onto the drive screen and
write them in the manner you expect.

You only have to format if you want to use packet writing software. That
allows drag n drop to be done on the cdrw. If you want to use cdrw
without
formatting you can, just use them the same as cdr and erase them when you
want to reuse them.
