I have a workgroup with several XP Pro machines and two 2003 Server
member servers. I want to set permissions on the root of the d: drive
of each machine bit I am unable to do this on the XP boxes.

When I right-click on a drive and select Properties or Sharing &
Security the only tabs available are General, Tools and Hardware. The
Sharing and Security tabs are available on folders however. On the
server machines the Sharing and Security tabs are available on the
drives.

I have Simple File Sharing turned off on the XP boxes and I'm logged
on as Administrator. Is this one of those features that only works on
a domain but not a workgroup?

I have Simple File Sharing turned off on my XP Pro machines and all are in a
workgroup. I have the Sharing/Security tabs avilable for the drives yet can't say
why you don't.

See if any of this helps:

Thanks for the help Brian. Unfortunately nothing in those links helps
with the problem.

I tried joining one of the XP boxes to a domain but that didn't help
either. In the end I set the permissions with xcacls, but I would
really like to know what's causing it. It's a real head-scratcher.

It may be a corrupt reg key, see if this helps:
Click Start > Run, type in: regsvr32 rshx32.dll and press Enter or click Ok.

You're a genius Brian, that fixed it! :-)

The first machine in the workgroup must have had that key corrupted,
as I used a disk image from it to set up the rest.
