All machines have WIN XP SP2. All have all the firewalls removed. All have the new drive mapped. The new drive has print/file sharing activated. I can SEE the drive on all the computers now. It lists the drive, all folders on it, and all files on the main drive itself. But I cannot open any folder nor access any file, even to do a directory. LAN is thru a LINKSYS 4 port router NR041. This is exact same way the old drive was set up that worked fine. Nothing else was changed.

If by "All have all the firewalls removed" you mean disabled, disabling the firewall isn't sure fire to work.
As mentioned, if your using any third party software firewall you need to add the IP of the machine to the trusted zone for each machine you want to allow access. From what I take it as, you are using Windows firewall and not a third party software firewall, in this case make sure you have the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service started.

Click Start > Run, type in: services.msc and press Enter or click OK.
Scroll down Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
If it isn't started Right click on it and click Start in the popup menu.
Close out and try to access the drive from onother machine on the LAN.




A Question: the jumpers. There are 2 modes shown on the drive: 15 and 16 head. How do I know which this one is? It came set for the 16 head, but I don't see any stat on the info sticker that tells. It is a Hitachi Deskstar model HDS722525VLAT80 ATA/IDE 200 GB P/N 14R9203.

Leave it as is, it's preset by the factory that "knows" what to set it at. The only need you would have for it is if you were going to manually set the drive manually in the BIOS instead of letting the BIOS detect it automatically. The stickers aren't always specific to a single model drive and I'll venture to say yours is 16 Heads, not 15.

I just added a much-needed hard drive to my computer. It is seen by the computer, but not on the LAN on any other computer and not when looking on the LAN of the computer it is on!!! In the past, it was a simple thing of removing the Firewall or non-sharing, or something like that. Not this time. I have checked all of those things. It simply isn't there. But one I added before was OK when I installed it. I took it out and put this one in the exact same place as the other, smaller one, and it works fine, but won't show up on the LAN anywhere, which is the main thing I got it for: to be used as storage on our server. I couldn't find any help when Googling it. A couple of hours on that just gave me stuff about sharing.
Where do I go from here?

BTW, I didn't see any mention of your setting the machine up for the network. Did you?:
Right click MyComputer.
In the popup menu click Properties > Computer Name tab > Change button, input the machine LAN name and Network Domain or Workgroup name.
or
Right click MyNetwork Places.
In the popup menu click Properties.
Run either the New Connection Wizard or the New Setup Wizard.
