Note also that a symbol for the Nokia suite also appears in the notification
area no matter how many times I cancel it. And when I 'remove' this from
the system start up with the tool provided in SpyBot, it simply reinstalls
itself. (Similarly, I have used this tool to 'remove' something called
'ctfmon' which it says is unnecessary and a possible virus target, but this
too just reinstalls itself into the start up set, so one gets a whole stack
of 'disabled' lines... )

I don't quite see how either of these suggestions is going to work:

The icon maintains my preferred position on opening and closing XP: it is
only when the icon is clicked that it moves. It seems to be that a
function of opening the Nokia 'suite' is to simultaneously move the
shortcut icon to the left side of the desktop. But I do not understand
why this happens on the pc and not the laptop.

You could try using a layout dll. available in :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 188/Right Column
It adds a function in the context menu when you right click My Computer
or
Recycle Bin,where you can "Save Desktop Icon Layout & "Restore Desktop
Icon
Layout & see if that'll make it stick.
You merely download it to where ever you want & move the layout dll. to
C:Windows/System 32 & then double click the vbs. which adds it to the
registry & a prompt will let you know that it was successful. Then you
should see the addition to the My Computer & Recycle Bin right click
function.
If you have "Align to Grid" AND "Auto Arrange" both unchecked, then I
can't
see why it still decides to move.
She also has a tweak(but I haven't tried this one myself) that you can
"Save
Setting on Exit" Line 54/Right column,if that doesn't help.
