When you run windows update does microsoft know what software I have
installed and only send me the updates that I need?
That depends. First, Microsoft doesn't send any updates. You have to
*download* the updates in all cases, no matter if downloading via the
automatic update, via the Microsoft Update site or from Microsoft
download sites. Second, the automatic update notifies about critical
updates only while the Microsoft Update site offers optional updates
and driver updates in addition. Third, the automatic update and the MS
Update site offer updates only when needed or recommended (eg. IE7).
Example...If I have a software that needs .Net Framework 2.0, will they
then send me the updates for that version.
Yes. As for the term "send" see above - if you get an email from MS with
an "update" attached, you can bet that this mail is faked and that the
update being *sent* is virulent.
If I don't need 1.1 then they won't send it?
This has nothing to do with an installed application that *needs* .NET
Framework 1.1. If .NET Framework 1.1 has been installed (no matter if
needed), you'll see the updates at the Microsoft Update site and they
are available via the automatic update as well.
