I would say it turns out the whole issue was heat related. AFTER I had
reformatted and done a total system restore I turned the laptop over and
found that the fans on the bottom which push hot air out were totally
blocked with dust. I used the vacuum on them and re-installed a clean XP
and have had no problems at all since then.
All drivers and devices working fine and the machine seems to run more
quickly. Maybe the memory was reporting a lot of CRC errors and it was
doing a lot of re-reads. Not sure, anyway it works now.

Something is getting trashed when you use a blanking screensaver. Have you
tried not using a blanking screensaver? Are you sure no other power
management features are getting activated behind the screensaver? Standby
or hibernate? Note that the error message you're getting may simply be
appearing due to whatever measures you're taking to recover, not connected
to the original problem.
Unfortunately, I have no answer if the problem is specifically tied to
recovering from a screensaver or other power management event. Maybe
someone else an answer or two, but I'd probably just try a Repair
installation of your system (with that slipstreamed disk you're going to
make.) If you have IE7, make sure to uninstall it first.

I think I can manage the process, but I would not have to do it at all if
I could solve this damn "ApUsbPnP" problem.
I wanted to do the upgrade to Pro for some time on this machine. I
eventually reformatted and installed Pro. (To upgrade from Home to Pro,
I'll do a Fujitsu system restore and then upgrade using the modified Pro
disc. No problem there, I suppose.) But after the upgrade, I keep
getting a problem:
The computer works fine for a while. All updated Fujitsu drivers are
installed, all updates from Microsoft Update. No driver issues I can
see. The only things plugged into the laptop are a wireless mouse adapter
from Targus and a LAN cable.
But at some point, usually after a screen blanking screen saver, I
believe, things start to go wrong. It is as if internal memory has
become corrupted. Graphics don't look the same, text can be garbled,
TaskManager cannot be loaded, Shutdown from the Start menu is disallowed
because it says I don't have permission, drives become inaccessible,
programs can finish or show errors for unknown reasons, etc. I have to
shut the computer down from the alt-control-del menu, where Shutdown is
still allowed.
The I invariably get the message that the program "ApUsbPnP" will not end
on its own.
I have been getting help from Elmo on this under the thread "ApUsbPnP
hanging at shutdown", in this same newsgroup. So far, we have not solved
it.
I have checked for malware, I have set virtual memory to be managed by
Windows, I have disabled the power saving features of the USB ports and
the LAN connection, I have done AdAware scans, PCpitstop scans. I don't
think it is malware. I have been careful beyond all reason with what
goes on here. There is no process called ApUsbPnP in my system and there
is no file with that name anywhere on the system.
I never had this problem with the factory-installed XP Home setup, but
now it just won't stop.
So, I'd stick with the Xp Pro install I have now if I could fix that
problem. Otherwise I'm going to have to go back to the factory install
of XP Home and upgrade that using the modified XP Pro disc, as you all
have instructed me to do.
Whew! Anyway, Elmo has been great, but so far we still have no found it.
Any other ideas?

Slipstreaming would be the preferable option, since Martin will then
have a disk ready if/when it's needed to do a Repair install.
