Hi Bob,
Not the perfect answer, just a workaround/suggestion:
Remove/Restore Network Icon from Notification Area (Line 394 - right hand
side):

Hello,
I am using XP Pro SP2 with all updates. I have a wireless connection
managed by other software and I have it disabled unless I am where I can
connect to a network. However, there is always a Windows Network icon in
the taskbar showing disabled status even though, under the networks
properties, I do not have the box checked for notification when the
network has limited or no connectivity. How do I get this icon out of my
taskbar without using Windows to disable the network?
Bob
