RE: Hyperthread problems

One last thing. I already downloaded and installed the hotfix file you
suggested.

Thank you for the quick response. I'm guessing it goes into hibernation from
the splash screen. It could just be shutting down. 2nd, I really don't want
to install XP again. Next, since XP in safe mode recognizes the HT but
freezes (hibernates, shuts off, whatever) I figure you can rule out needing
to do anything with the BIOS i.e. it's working the way the motherboard manual
says it would when an HT CPU is installed.

Other documentation has led me to conclude that this problem has something
to do with the ACPI. Short of a fresh install, what are my options? Should I
reinstall SP2?

1st,how does xp hibernate from start-up....2nd,why only SP1,SP2 updates
improve system performance among other areas. Also, try power off pc,locate
the battery & remove it,locate the CMOS jumper pin on the MB & move it from
1-2 position to 2-3 for .45 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,replace
battery,start
pc.On start up you'll need to reset basic BIOS settings,date/time,etc.load
optimal
BIOS defaults,then reset for any add-ins,save & exit.Also,thier is a hotfix
for mult-
iple processors,but SP2 must be installed,its kb896256 Thiers also a
stability
update for intel processors that came out from microsoft, but SP2 must be
running.

I've looked through all the questions and answers concerning HT before I
asked this question. I just upgraded from a 2.66 to a 3.06HT. When I
activate the HT in BIOS XP hibernates/shutsoff after the splash screen.
Nothing brings it back from that mode. When I deactivate HT in BIOS
everything's back to normal. When I start XP in safe mode with HT activated
the taskmgr lists two processors.

I've made sure the BIOS is current and the ACPI multiprocessor PC is
identified under Computer in Device Manager.

I'm running XP SP2 and my authentic copy is XP SP1 and I'm really hoping I
don't have to reinstall it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
