Re: Windows over Linux??

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Alias,

As much as I like Linux, we need to be a bit more understanding that the average Windows user may not feel comfortable with using the terminal in linux...so that TCO should include the opportunity cost of your time fixing things...I know, I know, fixing things forces one to learn and stuff (I personally enjoy it)...but as they say..."Waiting for a forum response at 3am to know how to edit your .xorg when you get a black screen while editing your OpenOffice documents due in a few hours: Priceless"

Vista has a learning curve too. Any new OS does. That said, most things can be done using the GUI in Ubuntu.

To be fair, I find Office 2007 quite a good product and I do not think it can run under wine.... but once again, if anyone is expecting to run everything they do in Windows under linux+wine, they are wasting their time....Moving to Linux involves, almost certainly having to find opensource equivalents to most of the stuff you do. Is it bad? Depends in specifics.

With what I do, ABIWord and Open Office are more than sufficient.

One las thing, an area in which I think Linux is quite superior is in Virtualization tools. VirtualBox is quite a great product, way better than virtualpc 2007 if you ask me. you can even run Vista, Xp, MacOSX all in the same machine, at the same time (if you have the RAM).

And of course, Linux runs with quite lower requirements. No Antivirus, Antispywere processes urning in the background! and of course, an amazing scheduler in the kernel.

Of course, people like linux because the philosophy behind it (sharing, owning instead of renting software and that stuff)...but for most of us, it is hard to find time for philosophy between tight deadlines.

Just my 1.5 cents.

So do a dual boot with XP until you're used to Ubuntu. That's what I did.

There are no advantages, only disadvantages:

Problem XP Pro Feisty Fawn
Viruses Yes No
Malware Yes No
Bloatware Yes No
Activation Yes No
Windows Genuine
Advantage Yes No
Cost Yes No
Install on
Multiple Computers No Yes

You can't compare Ubuntu and XP in such a simple manner.
I just did.

Ubuntu evolved a lot as a desktop alternative, BUT Microsoft has a
clear advantage with aplications as Office (if you want we can compare
it against OpenOffice) dominating the market, DirectX for gaming,
hardware support, and so on.
If one needs office, one can run it in Wine. If one needs a gaming machine; you're right, Windows is the OS for gaming but only because the people who make the gaming software don't make it for Linux. The same is true for hardware support. As Linux becomes more popular and people get wise to the Microsoft Con Game, the hardware and gaming people will start supporting Linux.

Again you can't compare costs, you MUST use the TCO (Total Cost of
Ownership), just because you can download and operating system and
install it for FREE, it doesn't mean that won't cost any money over
time.
It hasn't cost me one red penny since I installed it a year ago.

Genuine Advante? I don't think this is a bad thing, it's just
marketing for a service, and lets face it, UBUNTU also sell support,
but it isn't mandatory (this adds to the TCO by the way)
Genuine Advantage is a flawed program that only inconveniences paying customers and does absolutely nothing to stop piracy, not that MS' paying customers should be forced to help MS or the police catch pirates. IBID WPA.

Viruses, worms, and all kind of malware targets all kind of operating
systems, Windows having such a big market share, is THE target. I know
your response, 60% of Web sites runs Apache/Linux why they aren't they
attacked? well, read this : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/05/windows_linux_unix_security_vulnerabilities/

There are no known viruses or malware in the wild for Ubuntu. Period.

What's the most expensive component of an average Windows computer? The CPU? No. The motherboard. No. The hard drive? No. The video card? No. Windows? YES.
