I hope this helps and forgive the arrogant Microsoft Boys and Girls for
flaming you. They can't help it as they *know* the above is true.

You can't compare Ubuntu and XP in such a simple manner.
I just did.
Ubuntu evolved a lot as a desktop alternative, BUT Microsoft has a
clear advantage with aplications as Office (if you want we can compare
it against OpenOffice) dominating the market, DirectX for gaming,
hardware support, and so on.
If one needs office, one can run it in Wine. If one needs a gaming
machine; you're right,Windowsis the OS for gaming but only because the
people who make the gaming software don't make it forLinux. The same is
true for hardware support. AsLinuxbecomes more popular and people get
wise to the Microsoft Con Game, the hardware and gaming people will
start supportingLinux.
Again you can't compare costs, you MUST use the TCO (Total Cost of
Ownership), just because you can download and operating system and
install it for FREE, it doesn't mean that won't cost any moneyover
time.
It hasn't cost me one red penny since I installed it a year ago.
Genuine Advante? I don't think this is a bad thing, it's just
marketing for a service, and lets face it, UBUNTU also sell support,
but it isn't mandatory (this adds to the TCO by the way)
Genuine Advantage is a flawed program that only inconveniences paying
customers and does absolutely nothing to stop piracy, not that MS'
paying customers should be forced to help MS or the police catch
pirates. IBID WPA.
Viruses, worms, and all kind of malware targets all kind of operating
systems,Windowshaving such a big market share, is THE target. I know
your response, 60% of Web sites runs Apache/Linuxwhy they aren't they
attacked? well, read this :http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/05/windows_linux_unix_security_v...

There are no known viruses or malware in the wild for Ubuntu. Period.
What's the most expensive component of an averageWindowscomputer? The
CPU? No. The motherboard. No. The hard drive? No. The video card? No.Windows? YES.

So, as far as I can see, when you need a killer app you need a windows
api emulator... this is because?
:)
Maybe you have an alternative, use bochs or qemu for running Windows
for doing real works (hey! at leats you are running Linux at "low
level")
About Virus?
Remember that IT security is more just virus, I'll say it againt read:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/05/windows_linux_unix_security_vulnerabilities/
In an enterprise enviroment where desktops PCs are the weakest link
this is far more critical that viruses, I (as a sysadmin) don't like a
denial of service, don't like buggy daemons, I work in a network with
4000 windows 2k and xp machines, a VIRUS NEVER pass the DMZ, or wasn't
filtered by our Windows Antivirus (TrendMicro).
Cost again
It's really easy (my salary and extra hours add to the TCO) to keep up
todate with services like Windows Update, it's really easy the
management with ActiveDirectory (less people add less to the TCO).
Now for the regular guy desktop
Now, far from the IT deparment, I just wonder what drandma could say
if her new printer or webcam isn't recognized by Ubuntu, but hey! it
really easy, I should send a mail, something like this:
"Grandma, download the latest kernel (do you know where to get it no?,
we had this problema a few months ago), for the new webcam there is a
driver written by a 15 years old kid, download the tarball (I'm sorry
grandma, this isn't at the ubuntu universe or multiverse for download)
a compile it, should work ok!
P.S grandma, remember the tar parameters you forgot last time!"
