What I did was format a new hard drive with NTFS, then; when I went to
install windows on this new drive (d:) I had to copy the xp cd to my old
hard drive c: (fat32) as the windows installer could not create a page
file on d: (because it was NTFS). Anyway It was a chore but I managed to
install windows from c: onto d:
Now it seems that the windows directory and all related files are on D:
infact everything apart from any system files like boot.ini etc...
..they are all on c:
I need to get rid of C:, and change D: to the master but when I do this
even after copying the boot files from c: to d:, I cannot boot from the
new Hard Drive.
I've read about using the windows Xp console or something but I dont
think my XP cd is bootable - and I dont really know what I am doing!!

You write "the windows installer could not create a page file on d:
(because it was NTFS)". This is incorrect. Windows will create a
paging file either on a FAT/FAT32 or on an NTFS partition.
To replace your primary master disk you can do this:
1. Connect the new disk as a slave disk.
2. Boot into WinXP.
3. Partition & format the new disk.
4. Mark its first partition as "active".
5. Copy the following hidden files from C: to the active
partition on the new disk:
c:\ntldr
c:\ntdetect.com
c:\boot.ini
6. Disconnect the failing disk.
7. Make the new disk the primary master disk.
Your system should now boot normally.
