Hi
Thanks for reply. Perhaps I haven't explained this very well.
I don't want to install a new O/S on the new HDD
The aim is to copy an existing O/S from an old HDD to a new HDD so that the
new HDD can be configured to replace the old HDD as the system disc.
I have described what I did when the O/S = Win98
I need to know what to do when the O/S = WinXP. I suspect it will be the
same process, but it's a lot of work to go through on the basis of an
assumption. Confirmtion of the process would be very agreeable...

just to be clear, there is the
win xp upgrade version and
the win xp full install version
if you choose the upgrade version
you must provide a prior version
of windows that was a full version.
there is more information on the
packaging and you might want
to clarify this aspect with the
technical sales person.

win xp upgrade version
is designed to virtually
install itself without all
the hassles.
just boot with the winxp
cd, select a couple of options
and sit back and relax.
however, if you
will be using a win xp "upgrade"
it will either look for your old
o.s. on the hdd or it will
ask you to insert the win98 disks
into the drive so it can scan and
verify you are entitled to install
the winxp upgrade.
as mentioned, the winxp installation has
been streamlined but it also has new
security features to prevent it from
being pirated....

Is there a process for replacing the system HDD on a Win XP PC?
With help from the Win98 group I worked out a way of installing a bigger
system HDD on a Win98 PC:
Install the HDD
Make a boot floppy
Boot from the floppy & format the HDD + copy system files
Copy O/S from old HDD to new HDD
Reconfigure PC so that new HDD is the system disc
Reboot and let the O/S sort itself out.
Job done.
What about for XP?
