I'm new to these forums and a bit of a tech knownothing so here goes.

I was having some problems with IE7 (Home Edition, Service Pack 2) One of
the suggestions was to redownload it which I did. The internet is now running
again however:

1. I can't access Windows Update (page doesn't open)
2. I can't use Microsoft Update - it says it needs to repair/reinstall files
which I select everytime I try to use it but it always appears.
3. The Microsoft website cannot validate my Windows even though I ran the
tool and it says that it's genuine.
4. I get script errors every time I click on Norton. Script errors were the
initial problem, now Norton is the only time I get them.
5. I emailed microsoft, got some suggestions which didn't work, wrote back
to that effect and have heard nothing.

I also have XP incase that helps.

Hi John,
I think you have more than one issue to address here:
1.... Malware and Virus infection?.
2.... Windows Update engine is corrupt?.
3.... Corrupt IE7/Norton that causing this issue to arise?.
So please perform all the steps separate as:

Step1= Scan
Step2 = Repair the Windows updates engine
Step3 = Uninstall Norton and perform Clean Up and Defrag your system then
reinstall Norton

Step1= Your computer infected with malware and viruses so perform the
cleaning
steps as instructed one at a time and see if the infection gone , if you
still then proceed with the next step:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.

2.... And also for malware from here:

Step2 = Windows updates:
Try to Repair your Windows Update Engine, to do that follow these steps to
reregister the DLLs by opening a Run Command and type these Commands
one-by-one and click [Enter] or [OK]:
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
You can copy and paste the text in a notepad and save as reg.bat on your
Desktop then Double click the icon to run the File.

Step3 = Uninstall and Reinstall after => Run disk Clean Up and Defrag in
safe mode, then Open run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK]
Note the space between sfc_/
