My accounts department is using a DOS base accounting software

Huh? I haven't seen a DOS-based accounts package in commercial use for at LEAST 12 years.........
Isn't it time they got something better?

12 years? Come on now, Gordon, are you trying to tell us that there were no DOS accounting programs in commercial use in 1995?

No, I said I hadn't seen any SINCE 1995....

You gotta be kidding! You seem to be insinuating that all the guys running WFW and Novell over DOS immediately abandoned their DOS accounting software as soon as Windows 95 came out. You really can't expect anyone to believe that, can you? Accpac Plus, for example, is pure DOS accounting software and was very good and very popular accounting software, and it *still* is good accounting software. It was supported until just a few short years ago. Accpac for Windows didn't come out until 2000 or later and you can be sure as hell that those who paid $5,000 and more for the DOS Accpac Plus didn't rush out to stand in line at the Accpac store just to spend another $5,000 to change their software to the new Windows version!

DOS accounting programs are still in use today and yes they do meet GAAP, if one needs to change the format of the reports to suit newer reporting standards that is no big problem.

And as a Management and Systems Accountant I throw my hands up in horror! I can't beleive firstly that any DOS accounting programs are still supported - we moved from one in 1993 simply because the vendor was going to stop DOS support then....
Secondly as a Management accountant I can't beleive that anyone SERIOUSLY uses DOS-based packages in a modern accounting environment....

How preposterous! Are you suggesting that DOS programs can't add and subtract? Whether the programs run on DOS, Mac, Linux, Sun/Solaris/Unix makes little difference! Accounting can be done with a pencil and paper. Some mom and pop outfits do their accounting with the most basic of accounting software or methods and at the end of the year they bring their balances to their accountants and the accountant prepares pro-formas for those who need it.
