Re: Explorer crash

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Have you run chkdsk.exe yet to fix any ntfs problems ?
If not - schedule one and reboot.

....if you can right-click drive c:\ to get a pop-out menu and "properties | Tools | Error-checking" that is :-)

We have a Windows XP computer that is having an unusual problem:
1 - When we open My Computer we get the list of local and network drives as
expected. If we then click on Local Drive C: explorer crashes.
2 - When we go to search for a file and search for any file, it does not
matter which, we get the list of locations for that file in the results pane.
If we chose a file in a location on the C: other than in the root directory
and right click to open containing folder, the folder opens without a problem
in explorer. If we then go up the directory tree towards the root directory
we can proceed normally until we ask to move up to the root directory, at
which point explorer crashes.
3 - If we open a Command Prompt window, we can go to the root directory of
the C: drive without a problem, list it (dir), check attributes (attrib),
security permissions (cacl), etc.
4 - If in explorer we map a drive (say X:) to the C$ drive on the local
machine and then open the X: drive, no problem, we can now browse the Local
C: drive through the X: mapped drive.

So the problem only occurs when we try to access the root of the C: drive
from explorer.

Anybody got an explanation and solution?
